For me, photos fall into two different categories. The first is capturing moments with family and friends. These photos of course are full of people, occasions and life as it happens. The second is mirroring the essence of nature along with the grandeur of architecture, so people might open their minds and see the beauty of things natural and man made that surround them.
In my images, I often wait for people, cars and anything distracting to be out of the frame before I release the shutter. I avoid people if possible in my art, so the scene is timeless and can’t easily be dated by fashions...
While painting and drawing started early on for me, I have forever had an affinity for images that can be captured through photography. After all, the word photography means “light-writer” or “painting with light”. Therefore photography was a natural extension for me to explore the use, techniques and artistic possibilities that can be produced with a camera.
I have experimented with many types of cameras over the years...from the Polaroid with flash cubes as a child, to film and dark room work as a young adult, and to the amazing technology of digital imaging we use today. My eye for color,...
Bologna is a city known for its cuisine, its porticoed streets and for housing one of the oldest universities in Europe. Be a tourist in Bologna - especially if you like people, food and bologna - which is unlike what we have here in the US. Our bologna (commonly called boloney) is a more finely ground fatty pork sausage than what originated in the Italian city of Bologna. It’s worth your while to stop in the meat markets to see all the large sausages strung up and hanging from the ceilings. Make sure to buy a few slices to snack on while you wander through the porticos of this gorgeous city.

Prague, Czech Republic is one of my favorite cities. Prague was one of the least damaged cities in World War II, and so much of the architecture that you see is original. The entire city appears to have a color scheme of rich red tile rooftops, oxidized green domes and yellow ochre stuccoed walls. With the rich warm colors we have found that our favorite time to visit is in the fall, when the trees echo the city colors.
When walking down the miles of cobblestone alleys you will discover beautiful murals and art hidden away as a treat for only the most observant visitor. I always tell people...
When I think about travel the two words that come to me are “mind expanding.” We get entrenched in our daily lives and our “world” can feel small and revolve mostly around our daily commutes, our familiar foods, our comfortable homes, etc.
When traveling we can open ourselves up to “seeing” our world in a new light. We can appreciate “old” buildings as the remains of cultural history instead of just seeing the building as “old” and needing to be torn down. [Smirice Courtyard, Smirice, Czech Republic] We can try foods with flavors that are unfamiliar to us that might inspire...
I never imagined when I was young that would go anywhere beyond the borders of the USA. In fact, when I chose a foreign language to take in Junior High, I chose Spanish because I figured I might get to Mexico one day...but France was certainly too far away.
Fast forward to college at the University of Kansas. My (soon to be) husband Doug was in Chemical Engineering, while I was in the school of Fine Arts at KU. Doug took an internship in Sweden one summer and traveled all over Europe on weekends. I am convinced that his experience that summer is what led him to seek out a career that would have...
Hello Art Lovers and Travelers
I’m excited to connect with you all in a new way. My website is where I share my work, but my blog is where I’ll write about what stirs me. I’ve always felt that art radiates energy that connects us to our world and reminds us to be more aware of the beauty and color that surround us. When you open your mind, you open your eyes and realize that every place is extraordinary in it's own way.
I titled my first museum exhibition, “Mirrors of Latitude,” because what I love to do is go out and reflect back in my art what I see and what I want others...
